It is noteworthy that Shahbagh played a prominent role in “the July 2024 movement,” too. As such, theDeyal Likhoncreatedby students at Dhaka University carry a sense of historical inheritance.

Shahbaghmarks the junction between ‘Old Dhaka’ to its south and ‘New Dhaka’ to itsnorth. Bangladesh’s leading educational and public institutions are located here, including the University of Dhaka (DU), Dhaka Medical College, the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), andBangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

With Dhaka University at its center, the area has been the origin of major political movements in the nation’s history, including the Bengali Language Movement in 1952. It was in Shahbaghwhere Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his historic speech calling for the independence of Bangladesh on March 7, 1971. Since then, Shahbaghhas become a staging ground for various protests by students and other groups. On February 8, 2013, it was the site of public demonstrations protesting a lenient ruling against war criminals.
